Zohran Mamdani is rewriting political norms around support for Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu could be experiencing nervous regarding the new mayor's decisive victory in the November 4th NYC mayoral election. This isn't just because of baseless accusations of antisemitism but rather because the new mayor has broken a long-standing political taboo regarding calling out Israel's leadership for successful New York elected officials.

Breaking Traditional Patterns

NYC boasts the largest Jewish population in the United States – plus the second biggest of any city globally following Tel Aviv. Traditional thinking held that many Jewish constituents placed importance on defending the Israeli government above other issues, so that questioning Israel's policies would alienate these voters.

The new mayor completely overturned this assumption. Throughout the election he spoke openly and accurately regarding what he called genocidal actions in the Palestinian territory. He maintained that everyone living in Israel should have the same rights. He even stated he'd detain the Israeli leader if he visited the city. Nevertheless, about 33% of New York's Jewish electorate supported him, plus numerous additional voters.

Analyzing Electoral Success

Certain Jewish constituents might have been uncomfortable with Mamdani's stance on Israel yet valued other elements of his agenda, including his relentless focus on cost of living concerns. Others, including the author, were attracted by his candor on this crucial matter. Numerous people were also likely disturbed by the efforts of Mamdani's primary rival to smear him using baseless claims of prejudice.

After winning, the mayor has maintained his openness about Israel. In an unexpectedly cordial encounter with the president in Washington, Mamdani repeated his position about genocide and pointed out that the US government was funding these actions. The president allowed the remark pass without response.

Policy Consequences

After an incident in which a prominent Manhattan synagogue welcomed an organization encouraging Jewish Americans to move not only to Israel but also to communities within the occupied West Bank, Mamdani highlighted the unlawful nature of these settlements. This reflects international law of the Fourth Geneva Convention, that forbids a military occupier from transferring its citizens into captured lands.

It's hard to overstate how unusual such comments are from an elected New York City political figure.

Broader Political Landscape

This doesn't mean that NYC officials don't question Israel. Last year, the Senate leader, the Jewish Democratic leader representing New York, gave a much-discussed speech stating that while Israel has the right to self-defense, it should minimize harm to Palestinian civilians. But his language was cautiously phrased – far milder than Mamdani's – and he declined to endorse Mamdani even when he won the Democratic primary.

Even now, Mamdani is attracting other progressive candidates to New York City congressional races who are willing to criticize Israel and challenge incumbents who won't. Evidently, he has shattered the barrier and launched a movement.

National Significance

We shouldn't equate New York to the US as a whole. It remains a solidly Democratic and exceptionally progressive city. More importantly, from years living there, a large portion of its Jewish population embraces these liberal values. Within more Jewish communities across America, there's frequently more feeling of vulnerability and therefore stronger support of Israel as a potential haven from discrimination. In New York, Jewish life is woven into urban culture. The safety that comes from being a New York Jew frequently results in greater receptiveness to honest criticism of the Israeli government.

International Context

The political shift on Israel that Mamdani's victory represents should serve as an alarm for Israeli leadership. Its actions in the conflict has made Israel an international outcast across the globe. Even Germany temporarily halted weapons exports that could be used in the territory. The UK, Canadian government, France and Australia acknowledged Palestine's statehood. Israel confronts genocide charges before the International Court of Justice, and the prime minister along with ex- defense minister confront atrocity allegations at the global tribunal for depriving and blocking aid to Gaza's population. Modern Israel is overwhelmingly dependent on the defense funding, weapon deals, and diplomatic support from one nation: America.

US Political Evolution

This signifies Donald Trump wields considerable influence. And he reads public opinion. He must see that established pro-Israel lobbying organizations are unable to rally Jewish votes as successfully as previously. He must observe that even his religious conservative base – historically the strongest reliably pro-Israel voters – are having second thoughts after recent events in Gaza.

Israel's declining popularity in the United States appears to be a reason why the president decided to push through his Middle East proposal on Netanyahu even though it didn't satisfy all his maximalist demands. The declining support for Israel will undoubtedly affect future decisions as Trump considers if he should demand a clear pathway to a Palestinian state, like Middle Eastern are urging. The president will require their assistance to finance Gaza's reconstruction and to supply a global stabilization force for the territory.

Final Analysis: Changing Landscape

That support for Israel isn't anymore required for New York politics might ultimately signify that it isn't obligatory in federal politics. This means good news for Palestinian justice yet negative consequences for the aspirations of Netanyahu and his far-right allies that the US will continue ignoring Israel's policies as it attempts to settle the Palestinian conflict through genocide, forced deportation, or ongoing apartheid.
