New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm this decision promptly after his triumph in November.

"My choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

A Contentious Issue

In his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
