Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
