This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
