The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
