Slot Insists He Is Safe and Has The Club's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for doubts to be raised about his future after another convincing loss versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the club's poorest run after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a tough night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I've received significant backing from the top,” Slot remarked.
“It would be great to turn it around and secure a win of course but if you are coaching a team and underperforming then it is normal that doubts arise.”
He added, “I am OK with my position. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his conversations with the club's leadership, Slot revealed:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me every single minute each day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “During our regular conversations we have I perceive the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Problems and Squad Response
The manager expressed regret over familiar failings from his squad in their Champions League defeat, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more forthright in his view of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the solutions. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder stated.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond getting mad inside. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the words.”
He added, “It’s hard because I play for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool all my life.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Reds side going through a period of this nature with results like these.”
Jones finished, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as that badge is gone, we’re always going to battle.”
“Our aim is to get this team back to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all once more the values of this club and the reason it's called the best team in the world.”
“At this moment, we’re in the shit and we have to turn it around.”
