Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Captives in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official stated that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into areas of Gaza still under IDF control to support the search for the remains of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Captive Bodies Handover

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on 10 October, Hamas is required to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has agreed to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has to date handed back the remains of fifteen of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those bodies are believed to be in locations past the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

“At the request of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) joined a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased past the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the organization.

The spokesperson added: “Those involved to the conflict established the modalities of the mission and delegated the Red Cross to serve as a impartial mediator. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

The official additionally clarified: “The ICRC was not involved in the search for the deceased nor does it engage in the retrieval of remains.”

According to global legal norms, it is the responsibility of the parties engaged in a conflict to locate, collect, and recover the bodies of the deceased.

US Ultimatum and Regional Recovery Operations

Recently, the American leader delivered a two-day ultimatum to the organization. “They is going to have to start handing over the remains of the hostages who died, which include two Americans, quickly, or the additional nations participating in this significant truce will intervene,” he wrote on his online channel.

When the 48-hour deadline approached, the group, joined by the ICRC, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for bodies past the line marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An Israeli spokesperson said the delegation would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the operation.

Official Verification and Media Reports

This development was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that members of the group had been allowed to enter sections of Gaza under military authority to search for the bodies of captives, alongside Egypt’s and Red Cross teams.

“For this purpose, representatives were permitted to pass the designated boundary,” the source was cited as stating.

Video published by a regional network appeared to show members of a specialized group – part of the organization’s armed faction tasked with holding captives – accompanying a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to a southern city, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Locating Hostage Bodies

Efforts to locate for the remains of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most delicate matters in the ceasefire agreed between the parties. Yet, the effort to locate the bodies has proved challenging from the outset, given the presence of an approximate 60m tonnes of debris across the strip, where, as per local health authorities, at least 10,000 Palestinians are listed as missing, trapped under the debris.

Conflicting Statements on Body Whereabouts

The group has stated it lacks information on the precise locations of all the bodies, saying it has lost contact with a number of its teams that had been detaining the captives and were reportedly killed during military strikes.

However, an official representative claimed that the organization was aware of the locations of the bodies. “Should the group exerted greater effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our hostages,” the official said.

American Stance and Weapons Surrender Talks

While the US president has conceded that some of the bodies are difficult to reach, he said that “the rest they can hand over immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are not.”

“It may have to do with the surrender of weapons of Hamas,” he noted.

Washington has said it has received guarantees from Hamas that the faction will disarm, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains hesitant to give up its arms without firm guarantees about the fate of its fighters.
