Out of Europe - Next Up, Celtic Face a Pivotal Fortnight

Celtic squad in action

Six of Celtic's upcoming seven fixtures are away from Celtic Park.

With the Europa League behind them, Celtic are now staring down a season-defining fortnight.

Come mid-March, they could be motoring in the league with the wind at their backs and through to the Scottish Cup last four.

Alternatively, they might find themselves further toiling to defend their title and staring at a silverware-free season.

The first stop is a trip to Ibrox on Sunday for a huge league clash, with Celtic trailing Rangers by two points after playing one match less, with Hearts six clear of the title holders.

Then it is a midweek trip to Aberdeen, before returning to Ibrox in the Scottish Cup last eight and then hosting in-form and formidable Motherwell.

A half-dozen of their following seven fixtures are away from Celtic Park. This often-criticized Celtic group is about to be put under severe pressure after a tumultuous first two-thirds of the season.

"We can expect a lot of twists and turns," commented a ex-Celtic player. "It wouldn't shock me if the league goes to the final day. But they will have to do it over the next five or six games. You have to be utterly consistent, otherwise they won't take the trophies."

Manager Faces Selection 'Headache'

Although the victory over Stuttgart being ultimately irrelevant in Celtic's quest to reach the knockout stages of the Europa League, it could yet prove significant.

The manager rotated eight of his starting line-up and some of the fringe players put in impressive displays to claim the club's maiden win in Germany.

Luke McCowan calmly slotted the decisive goal after just 28 seconds and was a positive influence, while in the defence, Dane Murray excelled in a gutsy performance.

Murray in particular stated his claim to start next to Liam Scales. One magnificent defensive intervention stood out and he was assured when dealing with set-pieces.

But the most discussed display was delivered by second-choice goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo as he played his part in a first Celtic clean sheet in six matches.

The established goalkeeper has been under intense scrutiny after a string of mistakes. The 26-year-old was called upon and made several crucial stops, in a display described as "perfect" by a former Celtic midfielder.

A former Celtic goalkeeper is of the opinion Sinisalo did enough to start against Rangers on Sunday.

"He had some very good saves and looked calm when he had the ball and had good anticipation," was the assessment. "It's a big decision to make at the weekend. On that performance, I would be giving him the nod. Let him keep his place in the team now."

The Celtic manager agreed that several players have given him "food for thought".

"[Sinisalo] played brilliantly in the game, really well. That's the name all round the dressing room," the manager said. "He's got a lot of talent."

'Pivotal' Rangers Challenge Lies Ahead

The other benefit of Celtic's win was that they demonstrated they can grind out a victory.

Historically, Celtic have pitched up and naturally looked to control possession from the first whistle to the last against every domestic opponent.

But this less robust side had looked more and more susceptible this year, often conceding more than one goal per game.

Having not won at Ibrox in their last four visits and given Rangers have won their last ten home matches, a show of resilience in Germany was timely.

Could Celtic take a slightly more pragmatic approach? Right now, it is all about winning.

"You don't have to have most of the ball to win the game," noted an analyst. "You've got to work hard, defend well, get a slice of fortune and have a reliable shot-stopper."

"Celtic have struggled for form this season, but they are still in contention [in the league]. They retain a chance, with a game in hand. The players will take great confidence from tonight - the weekend will be a decisive one."
