Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
