We are checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
