Smith has featured in 38 matches facing the English team and notched 3,436 career runs.
English crowds need to act better regarding the taunts they direct at Australia batsman Smith, states ex- manager Darren Lehmann.
Steve Smith, 36 years old, has been a common recipient of songs and jeers from English supporters following his role in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.
Smith was removed as skipper and suspended for a full year while Darren Lehmann, who was cleared of wrongdoing, resigned as coach after the event.
"The taunts you get is every day," Darren Lehmann stated. "It is astonishing."
"Smith is competing constantly. It must be tougher for him."
"Over in England they just refuse to forget. It seems they have ever done anything wrong in their life."
"It is only the ones that consume excess alcohol and carry on like pork chops."
History of the Ball-Tampering Incident
In a Test versus the Proteas, Steve Smith admitted the Australian "team leadership" created a scheme to alter the cricket ball.
Former opener David Warner instructed batter Cameron Bancroft how to employ sandpaper to scuff up the ball, and Bancroft was then spotted in the act by TV cameras in the middle of the match. The two players were also penalized in addition to Smith.
Fallout and Ongoing Response
Smith made his comeback after the ball-tampering incident in the 2019's Ashes match at Edgbaston Stadium and has been booed frequently ever since.
England fans also focus jeers on his upsetting media appearance in 2018.
"We made the mistake, accept it and move on," Darren Lehmann stated.
"One strives to move on the best you can. One faces brought back every day and that is a natural aspect."
"He can walk tall with how he handles all of it."
"England's Barmy Army need to be improved than that. The majority act that way and are quite encouraging of what goes on in the game."
