Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be challenging to recreate the higher calling he encountered as the national team coach.

Southgate expressed his plan to dedicate his efforts toward working with the youth and combating what he called a pervasive negative narrative currently found in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Outside of Coaching

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was questioned on rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and other leagues.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Prior to the release of his forthcoming publication, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for teenagers, drawing on insights from his time as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He believes that his time leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Parenting and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach remarked: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Conflict

He insisted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often centers on disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is scheduled to provide deeper reflections on guidance and national identity based on his distinguished time in football.
