Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined initialism came to light a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for doctors to care for a child who has lost their whole family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities has denied these accusations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.
The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy
The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. A competition that once promoted peace has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
